How is it transmitted?

HIV can be passed on through unprotected contact with infected blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate, or breast milk. Unprotected vaginal and anal sexual intercourse carry a greater risk of HIV infection. It is also possible to catch HIV through oral sex, though this is less common. Sharing needles – often for recreational drug use – or any other activity where bodily fluids are exchanged between partners, also increases your risk of contracting HIV.

What are the symptoms?

The early signs of an HIV infection can include headaches, fever, rash, sore throat, swollen glands, and vomiting. Of course, these symptoms frequently occur in far less severe conditions, such as the common cold and, as a result, the only way to be completely certain of your HIV status is to get tested.

What tests are available for HIV?

Better2Know's 4th generation 28 Day HIV DUO Test is a highly accurate test which can detect the virus 28 days post-exposure.

How is HIV treated?

Whilst there remains no cure for HIV, the condition is no longer considered the life-threatening infection it once was. If your infection is properly managed and monitored, you should expect to remain healthy, with a normal life expectancy.

What happens if I do not get treated?

HIV gradually attacks your immune system by reducing the number of CD4 cells that combat foreign illness and disease. This results in an inability to fight off infections that the body would ordinarily be able to deal with naturally. If left untreated, this will lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, commonly referred to as AIDS.

When will I receive my results?

Better2Know’s HIV test results take between one and five working days from the receipt of your sample at our certified laboratory. Our Instant testing results, on the other hand, will be ready within 30 minutes of collecting your sample.

Are my results confidential?
